Addressing the Top 10 OSHA Violations for Roofers

Two safety experts at the International Roofing Expo provided strategies for avoiding these types of violations on jobsites.

At the 2024 International Roofing Expo, presenters Jeff Mason and Julia Farrell—safety advisor and president respectively at Wryker Construction Supply—outlined the 10 most frequently cited OSHA standards for roofing contractors and how to prevent such violations on the job.  

Within these violations, citations for fall protection accounting for over half of the financial penalties for roofers last year, with around 8,000 citations for roofing contractors and 4,000 of those related to fall protection. Additionally, according to the data presented by Mason and Farrell, the average penalty for a fall protection violation is almost double the cost of other citations.  

“It’s important for safety and it’s also important financially,” Farrell said.
