Doing Your Homework Weeks Before The First Pour Will Result in Better Floors

Kim Basham, World of Concrete’ Educational Advisory Board Chair, shares some thoughts both why contractors should be better prepared for placing concrete slabs and knowledgeable about current trends on how to do it. Basham offered these insights with Editor Bill Palmer at the 2021 World of Concrete.

Basham, a consulting engineer with clients across North America, has seen a change in his business over the last few years. “More contractors are focusing on pre-job preparations including mix design evaluations and control joint designs as they work with building owners to craft a better floor,” said Basham. These efforts go a long way reducing curling, a slab’s greatest nemesis.

Basham and Palmer also reviewed trends in surface textures, including polishing. They recommended  the recently published ACI SPEC-310.1-20: Specification for Polished Concrete Slab Finishes document as a great resource.

Basham is a popular World of Concrete Seminar presenter. Several of his presentations are currently viewable at World of Concrete’s Reconnected event that takes place through the end of August.
