Why Are Standards Important?

We discuss the importance of standards and how the cement and concrete industry is addressing the new challenge of sustainability with Cesar Constantino, a business development director with Separation Technologies.

Standards are a key to success in the construction industry and are critical to keeping employees safe on the job.

Cesar Constantino, director of business development for Separation Technologies (a Titan America company) and new chairman of the board of ASTM, discusses the importance of standards and how the cement and concrete industry.

ASTM International, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials, is "a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of voluntary consensus standards," according to the organization's website.

"Everything that we see on a job site in this day and age pretty much goes back to safety and then standards behind them," he said. 

Constantino said standards also play a critical role in building consumer confidence in the industry. 

He said standards can enable growth in the industry and pointed to new materials that are based on standards as an example. Constantino said when new materials come out that are based on standards they can see a quicker adoption in the market.

Constantino also addressed sustainability and said collaboration will open doors to new possibilities.

"As we go forward I do envision that this opening of doors is what's going to get us to build on a global platform to adopt bold objectives such as sustainability globally," he said.
