In this episode of the Pool & Spa Professional Influencer Series, Matt Gohlke, president of Gohlke Pools, sat down with P&S Pro to discuss ways his company has combated the labor shortage, how companies can improve their culture, and what to do as far as supply and demand issues.

Here are three key takeaways from their conversation (and don't forget to click the video above to watch Gohlke's full interview).

1. You have to be innovative in employee recruitment and retention

"Millenials are expected to make up 75% of the workforce by 2025," said Gohlke. "They're interested in other things (as compared to baby boomers)—work-life balance, happiness, community involvement, the opportunity for advancement and just being treated well." All things, he said, his company has done well.

Gohlke provides some ways his company has upped its game for out-of-the-box ideas on retention. "A happy workplace is really the key, and that's what we've worked toward," he said.

2. If you're losing people, implement an exit interview

Ask your employees what they want and why they may feel like they aren't getting that at your company. Gohlke encourages company owners to be kind, understanding and flexible. He says employers should put themselves in the employee's position on points of contention and ask for genuine feedback.

3. Plan, plan, plan when it comes to the supply chain

Gohlke suggests ordering materials in advance from vendors and being a good customer, which includes solving your own problems and paying your bills on time.
