Attendees at this year’s American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC) Annual Conference will have the option to become certified concrete flatwork finishers.

The certification courses will be offered as the ASCC convenes in September for its annual gathering. Certifications being offered include flatwork finishing and decorative concrete flatwork finishing.

What to Know ...

The ASCC Annual Conference will be held in Cleveland from September 29 through October 2. Group rates for the conference have a cutoff registration date of August 29.

The certification courses will run all day on September 29, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., at a cost of $250 per attendee.

“Become certified as an ACI [American Concrete Institute] flatwork finisher with a preparatory training course and exam,” the conference’s brochure says. “The training course will review basic concrete technology; material and mix proportioning; quality control tests; finishing tools; and placing, finishing, jointing and curing. Handouts will include questions similar to those on the certification exam. You’ll receive ACI’s Craftsman Workbook for ACI Certification of Concrete Flatwork Finishers.”

Other educational offerings at the conference include courses about the future of construction equipment and workforce development.

The conference will also feature courses related to 3-D-printed concrete, techniques to reduce carbon footprints and pre-task planning.

Concrete Finishing Certifications

If you can’t attend this year’s ASCC conference but are still interested in getting the certifications being offered there, you’re in luck.

The ACI grants concrete flatwork finisher certifications to candidates who have over 1,500 hours of on-the-job finishing experience and can pass a performance exam.

Additionally, advanced concrete flatwork finisher certifications are available for candidates who have over 1,500 hours of on-the-job finishing experience and can pass the ACI exam or who possess over 4,500 hours of on-the-job finishing experience (no exam required).

ACI certifications are active for a period of five years from the date of issuance.
