American inventions, such as the ready-mixed concrete truck followed by the laser screed, have transformed how concrete is used in construction. But one almost forgotten contribution was made about 75 years ago, dramatically launching one of our industry's largest global construction segments.

Charles Sunderland, then chief engineer for John A. Roebling & Sons Co., developed a unique process technique that stress-relieved steel wire at the mill. Gustaaf Magnel, a structural engineer who was amongst the first to embrace precast and post-tensioning in concrete construction, used Sunderland's steel strand on the Walnut Street Bridge in Philadelphia. The success of the project and Magnel's connection with structural engineers paved the way for the introduction of the prestressed and post-tensioned segment of concrete construction.

Today, engineers worldwide have embraced this combination of product innovation and engineering advancement. According to a 2023 study published by Zion Market Research, the demand analysis of the Global Tensioning Systems/Prestressed Concrete Market size and share revenue was valued at around $103.9 billion in 2022 and is estimated to grow to about $165.3 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of approximately 6.54% between 2023 and 2030.

Since 1976, the Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) has supported this vital industry segment by providing necessary technical information. This year, its support has taken a significant leap.

In January, at the World of Concrete 2024, PTI announced the release of the 7th edition of the Post-Tensioning Manual. This publication, introduced in 1972, has been a cornerstone in the industry, offering comprehensive insights into the design and construction of post-tensioned structures, such as bridges, pavements, walls and foundations.

PTI technical committees extensively rewrote the 7th edition of the manual. They also expanded the document's usefulness information by referencing other PTI publications in each chapter.

Another functional improvement is aligning PTI information with codes, such as ACI and ASHTO. The committee also referenced the innovative practices now used in post-tensioning construction.

Meanwhile, PTI added four new chapters and one new appendix to broaden the scope and relevance of the manual. These include:

• Chapter 22: Repair, Rehabilitation, and Strengthening of Structures

• Chapter 23: Building Information Modeling

• Chapter 24: Anchorage Zone Design

• Chapter 25: Sustainability

• Appendix C: PTI Barrier Cable Tests

The 7th edition of the Post-Tensioning Manual continues its pivotal role in shaping the understanding of post-tensioning technology. It is the entry point to resources for students, educators, contractors, inspectors, building officials, owners, end users, practicing engineers and architects. Just as important, it positions this important industry resource for continued growth.

You can learn more about the new publication by viewing an introduction to the 7th edition of the Post-Tensioning Manual webinar led by PTI Executive Vice President Tim Christle, P.E. During this one-hour webinar, Christle explains the updated and expanded PT Manual details. More importantly, Christle guides attendees through using the manual as a valuable resource for all facets of the PT industry.

You can view the webinar under the 2024 topic section. The webinar was the first of a series of PTI webinars with industry experts and features post-tensioning topics. The webinars and attendance certificates are administered through PTI Academy. The webinars are recorded for viewing later. Both live and recorded versions offer continuing education credit.
