The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) will lead an educational session titled “Resilient Asphalt Shingle Roofs” on Wednesday, Feb. 2 from 7:45 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. at the 2022 International Roofing Expo (IRE).

The session aims to increase understanding of resilience in roofing systems and highlight the importance of installing resilient roofing assemblies.

The presentation features four industry experts: Aaron R. Phillips, VP of Technical Services at ARMA; Brian Davis, director of Innovation Support Services at GAF; Stephanie Kiriazes, Codes engineer with Firestone Building Products; and Steve Hern, field technical manager for CertainTeed Roofing.

Each speaker brings a unique perspective and thought-provoking background.

Phillips serves as ARMA’s primary technical voice and has worked in the asphalt roofing industry since 1988. His career began at TAMKO Building Products LLC, where he spent time in R&D and technical services.

Davis has been with GAF for 15 years working closely with both GAF’s commercial and residential business segments. He was responsible for GAF’s tapered insulation department, technical roofing manuals, technical literature, and detailed drawings with a new focus on innovation and growth. Davis is an active member of AIA, ARMA, IIBEC, NRCA, RICOWI, and currently sits on the Board of Directors for SPRI.

Kiriazes is a classically trained mechanical engineer working with Firestone Building Products since 2019. She is also the Chair of the Tennessee Council of National Women in Roofing.

Hern works with contractors, owners, and design professionals in resolving field issues related to asphalt shingled and commercial roofing. In addition to training customers and staff in the intricacies of roof installation, Steve prepares technical documents for publication.

ARMA’s session will cover various topics, including the concept of resilience in the asphalt roofing industry, dealing with wind and water, the challenges of fires and wildfires, and improving impact resistance.

Scientists predict more frequent, severe, and destructive storms and natural disasters in the future.

Strengthening buildings to better withstand these events is necessary to fortify our homes, our businesses, and our communities.

Roofing systems are a key element of the building enclosure that protect people and contents, and asphalt shingle roofs are among the easiest to upgrade to improve their resilience.

ARMA’s presentation explains the concept of building resilience and shares steps you can take and choices you can make to improve your asphalt shingle roof’s ability to withstand water, wind, fire, and impact.

“We are thrilled to present in front of the IRE audience and connect with our colleagues,” Phillips said. “Our goal is to provide the roofing community with ideas and inspiration they can use to improve the resilience of asphalt shingle roofing systems.”

ARMA is a trade association representing North America’s asphalt roofing manufacturing companies and their raw material suppliers. The association includes the majority of North American manufacturers of asphalt shingles and asphalt low slope roof membrane systems.
