The International Roofing Expo's 12^th annual Community Service Day has gone digital.

Each year, IRE partners with the local chapter of Rebuilding Together to help make critical home repairs for those in need, including low-income seniors, veterans and individuals with disabilities.

“The impact the volunteers have on our clients is second to none and your volunteers are honestly some of the hardest working people we have come out,” said Bob Cleveland, ECHM, the executive director of Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada and National Affiliate Council representative. “And that’s saying something considering we average about 1,500 volunteers a year.”

“This is my favorite day of the year, partnering with roofing industry colleagues for a wonderful cause,” said Brandi McElhaney, senior conference manager, IRE. “The roofing industry is very generous with helping others and giving back to those in need.

For the 2021 edition, donations—the goal is to raise $10,000—will go towards replacing HVAC systems on several Southern Nevada homes, as well as a much-needed re-roofing project.

Lee Ann Luttrell, 73, has been a Las Vegas resident for 35 years. She has multiple disabilities that make it difficult for her to get around independently and require her to use a walker. 

Luttrell needs a new roof—a shingle roof with 2,700 square feet of pitch roof and 480 square feet of flat roof. Additionally, the swamp cooler on the roof needs to be removed and 18 linear feet of fascia on the gable side of the home needs replacing. 

Commercial Roofers, Inc. donated labor and Beacon Building Products donated the materials to replace Mrs. Luttrell’s roof, McElhaney said. 

“Over the last year we have had to make a lot of adjustment—and this is just one more,” Cleveland said of the move to a virtual Community Service Day. “We really wish you guys were coming out to swing hammers and paint again, but we look forward to next time. 

“Our volunteer projects are usually done by volunteers that are completing repairs or maintenance that we are not allowed to use our critical repair funding for,” he continued. “It is still greatly needed though. The impact on the homeowners pride alone is huge, not to mention what it does for the entire neighborhood.”

Next year’s Community Service Day will return to New Orleans on Jan. 31, 2022, preceeding IRE, which will take place Feb. 1-3 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

“In February we will be back where this all started, 13 years ago, in New Orleans and we are very much looking forward to rolling up our sleeves and helping residents of New Orleans that are in need,” McElhaney said.
