What's the Biggest Mistake Roofing Contractors Are Making?

According to Greg Hayne, too often roofing contractors "work in the business rather than on the business." In an exclusive interview, Hayne Coaching Group's chief innovation officer discussed what roofing contractors are doing wrong, as well as labor and 'recession-proofing' roofing businesses.

What's the biggest mistake that roofing contractors are making today?

To answer that question, Greg Hayne harkened back to a quote from motivational speaker Jim Rohn.

“If you work on your job, you'll make a living. If you work on yourself, you'll make a fortune," Rohn said.

According to Hayne, the chief innovation officer of Hayne Coaching Group, roofing contractors "work in the business rather than on the business.

"One of the biggest pain points for businesses is that today's contractors don't even know what that means," he emphasized.

During an exclusive interview with Roofing & Exteriors, Hayne also discussed labor and "recession-proofing" roofing businesses.

"We have had an ongoing labor shortage for quite a number of years," he noted. "It's going to continue. We can talk about the need to change the immigration policies because there are people that want to come here and work on roofs.

Hayne's expertise lies in helping roofing contractors' service departments. He explains that those contractors have to understand that "service is not about fixing roofs—that's repairs and maintenance services."
