Award Winners Showcase Roofing Style and Ingenuity

As part of its 2022 Masterpiece Contractor Project of the Year awards, DaVinci Roofscapes recognized seven roofing projects for their masterful work with its materials. The honorees include six residential projects and one commercial project, built by contractors of these California, Wisconsin, Illinois, Georgia, Delaware and Colorado properties.  

To qualify for the annual award, contractors must show “excellence of installation work, outstanding visual impact and ability of the roofing work to transform the look of a home or commercial project,” according to DaVinci’s guidelines. Each winning project challenged the installers’ creativity and craft and incorporated high-quality, durable materials from DaVinci and other roofing materials companies.  

A winning project by Copp Roofing & Construction, based in Blue Jay, California, required the installation of a new roof on a lakeside property tucked into the mountains in Lake Arrowhead, California. The homeowner shared concerns about the property’s aging slate roofs; the tiles were crumbling and falling off, creating obvious hazards. Copp was tasked with finding a sturdy alternative that would mirror the look of the home’s original colorful slate roof and withstand the elements of the mountainous location.  

Copp settled on DaVinci’s multiwidth slate product, a composite slate shingle manufactured with virgin resins, UV and thermal stabilizers. The material is Class A fire and Class 4 impact rated and can withstand rotting, cracking, chipping and breaking, according to DaVinci.  

As a bonus, the purple, gray, amber and blue-hued tiles of the colorway chosen by Copp and the homeowners were a near-perfect match to the original roof. “The colors are beautiful, pop and really add to the home's overall charm,” said company co-owner Barbie Copp. 

Given the home’s mountainous location, the installation presented challenges, including the difficulty of parking construction vehicles at the jobsite and unloading materials safely. However, Copp said that the company specializes in mountain projects statewide, so the team knew how to handle the restrictions and could work around the hurdles presented.   

The final result, Copp said, “is so realistic looking that people walking by think it’s actually real slate.” 

Across the country, another Masterpiece Contractor Project winner, Brennan Exteriors, installed a 12,000-square-foot roof on a newly constructed home in Mukwonago, Wisconsin, with complex features, including nine barrel roofs and a mushroom-shaped section.  

The homeowner sought to recreate a natural slate look without the hefty price tag and upkeep, said company owner Mike Brennan. Like Copp in California, the Brennan team selected DaVinci’s multiwidth slate composite shingle, designed to withstand severe weather and harsh conditions. It was a fortuitous choice: Shortly after the roof was installed, an intense hail and windstorm hit the area, but the new roof was not damaged.   

With such an eclectic design, Brennan said his team worked creatively to fit the roof around the barrel and mushroom sections. The team partnered with carpenters to fit the tiles to the roof line, which included designing a custom, built-in copper gutter to keep the sightline of a window unobstructed.   

“There were numerous roof lines and elevations that came together and made it a challenge to keep it a watertight area as well as look good,” Brennan said.  

In low-sloped areas vulnerable to heavy snow accumulation, the installers used EPDM and added copper snow guards on the entire roof. 

To complete the project, Brennan Exteriors also installed 6-inch, half-round copper gutters and 4-inch corrugated downspouts on the house, the detached six-car garage and the boat house. The new main house roof is a perfect match to the garage roof.
