Here, we’ll look at some of the most frequent questions homeowners raise about metal roofing.

Metal Roofing FAQs and Answers!

Perhaps you’ve heard that metal roofing is a more durable solution that needs less maintenance than shingles. Or maybe you just like the signature look and sound of a metal roof. Either way, we know you probably have some questions—choosing the right roofing material for you is an important decision! Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we receive about metal roofing, along with some helpful answers:

  1. Why should I consider having a metal roof? There are really lots of reasons! Metal roofing comes in many colors and profiles, is noncombustible, sheds precipitation well and is resistant to wind, fire and lightning. It’s durable, too; a well-installed metal roof can last you a lifetime!

  2. What metal roofing material options are there? The three most popular are aluminum, copper and galvalume steel. Aluminum is the cheapest, but it’s also the least rugged. Copper is a premium choice, but it also comes at a premium price. Galvalume steel is a great option because it’s cheaper than copper while also being incredibly strong, rugged and durable.

  3. How much does a metal roof cost? The final price of a metal roof will be based on several factors, including the square footage of the roof surface, the type of metal roofing material, chosen, the roof pitch and any special roof feature to work around (like chimneys, fans and vents).

  4. How long will a metal roof last? The metal substrate itself should last you a lifetime, as long as it comes with a good paint/protection system. Most problems that occur with metal roofs are a result of installation workmanship issues, not product issues.

  5. How loud is a metal roof during a rainstorm? Metal roofs deliver a distinctive sound during rainstorms that many find to be soothing. But how loud a metal roof gets is greatly determined by the chosen underlayment. Solid sheathing is generally quieter than spaced boards. The amount of insulation you have in place will also have a significant impact on how much roof noise you’re able to hear.

  6. Are metal roofs environmentally friendly? Yes, they are! Metal reflects solar radiation better than other roofing materials, so your structure stays cooler in the summer. A metal roof is also a perfect base for solar panel installation, should you be interested in going that route. Metal roofing also includes a percentage of recycled materials and the metal itself is essentially 100% recyclable. For these reasons, a metal roof really is a “green” roof solution!

  7. What’s the warranty like on a metal roof? It depends somewhat on the metal you choose, along with the specific product manufacturer. A galvalume steel substrate coated with Kynar 500, for example, often comes with a limited lifetime product warranty. Pay attention to your roofing contractor’s workmanship warranty as well; some roofing providers stand behind their work better than others!

  8. How will a metal roof affect my property insurance? A metal roof can actually help lower your insurance premiums. You can often enjoy a preferred rate thanks to metal’s resistance to fire, lightning, termites and other pests.

  9. Can I walk on a metal roof? Yes, you can. A metal roof is strong, durable and is more resistant to foot traffic than a shingle roof. Just be sure to wear slip-resistant shoes if you decide to venture out onto your roof, and make sure to wait until your roof is dry.

  10. How do I choose a metal roofing contractor? Many local roofers can nail a shingle, but there aren’t nearly as many local providers with the specialty tools, training and expertise needed to handle metal roofing installation with the necessary care and precision. Ask around to find out who folks trust in your local area before selecting a metal roofing contractor.

Choose a Local Metal Roofing Partner You Can Trust

No matter what type of metal roof you decide to go with, it’s best to partner with a local roofing contractor you can trust to do the job right. Check customer reviews on places like Google, Facebook and Guild Quality and ask around to see who your friends and neighbors have used for their own metal roofs.
