Owens Corning is tackling the conflict between structural performance and insulation for thermal bridging with the launch of Foamglas Perinsul Structural Insulating Block (SIB), a cellular glass insulation block. Previously, thermal bridging was difficult to address for masonry veneer applications because the insulating material needs to meet both structural load and thermal performance. Foamglas Perinsul SIB fulfills those needs, providing a continuous thermal barrier while possessing the compressive strength and dimensional stability required for masonry veneer wall loads for low-rise buildings without deflection.
The product is nonabsorbent and impermeable to water, and it will not shrink, compress, or deform over time. Designed to be installer-friendly, including for masons, Foamglas Perinsul SIB is lightweight, can be cut into any shape, and can be installed in extreme high and low temperatures. It comes in sizes to match those of standard masonry blocks and abuts end-to-end with no vertical mortar.
By solving the challenge of thermal bridging, Foamglas Perinsul SIB helps eliminate the need for over-insulation to meet efficiency requirements. “We’re hoping that this product is not only a solution to the thermal bridge problem, but also is a time saver and a cost saver,” says Tiffany Coppock, Commercial Building Specialist at Owens Corning.
