Community Outreach in Action in the Roofing Community

Connecting with the local community is an excellent way for roofing pros to give back and demonstrate their incredible skills. Here's how National Women in Roofing's Oregon Council members did just that through a recent project at a local veterans' community.

Members of the National Women in Roofing (NWiR) Oregon Council recently re-roofed a building at the Veterans Village in Clackamas County, Oregon, a transitional shelter community for veterans run in partnership with the local housing authority. The housing complex consists of three buildings encompassing shared community space, a kitchen and a bathroom and 30 individual pods that provide housing to local veterans in need of housing support. The transitional nature of the community means each veteran is partnered with a case manager who works to help address the veteran's needs and move them toward permanent housing.

As part of its mission to empower women in the roofing industry, NWiR encourages local councils to participate in community service and volunteer opportunities in their area. Local NWiR councils, like the Oregon Council, bring together roofing contractor associations, roof consultants, manufacturers, distributors and others to support women in the industry who want to network and regularly interact in a community setting. The councils receive full support and guidance from national NWiR leadership but are able to better understand and address the unique needs of their local members and communities.

The NWiR Oregon team worked together with Bliss Roofing, Malarkey Roofing Products and Dealers Supply Company, to donate materials, labor and equipment and completed the job in one day. They worked with five employees from Bliss Roofing to install the Malarkey OmniSeal multi-ply self-adhered flat roof system (donated by Dealers Supply along with the roof load). This system is designed for 4/12 and lower roof pitches and has color options to match the company's shingle offerings, according to Marlarkey's product page. The company also says OmniSeal products are made with proprietary polymer modified (rubberized) asphalt for additional weathering and increased strength, flexibility and durability.

Along with labor support, Bliss Roofing provided an Equipter and a drop-box for debris management throughout the project and catered breakfast, lunch, coffee and refreshments for everyone who came out for the day.
