About six years ago, recognizing the need to foster the advancement of additive manufacturing, ASTM International created the ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE). The Center has become a key portal for industry, government, and academia to share advances and help optimize the AM R&D and standards development processes.

AM CoE has three goals:

  • Establish standards, certification, and qualification for repeatable, consistent parts and processes;

  • Prevent gaps and duplication of work in a dynamic, fast-paced technology space

  • Identify challenges that can be solved with technological improvement

The Center's efforts will result in reducing the time it takes to develop consensus standards. The effort will get new standards into the hands of those who need them faster, drastically reducing AM time to market and increasing widespread adoption.

The Center’s most important event is the ASTM International Conference on Additive Manufacturing (ASTM ICAM 2020). The conference had been scheduled as an in-person event, but now will be held virtually on November 16-20, 2020.

ASTM ICAM 2020 is ASTM International’s fifth flagship event related to standardization, qualification, and certification with an emphasis on industry specific requirements addressing the entire additive manufacturing (AM) process chain. The five-day virtual conference includes 19 symposia and will be broken into a series of online sessions and panel presentations. The concrete industry will follow up this with the Symposium on Standards Development for Cement and Concrete for Use in Additive Construction, scheduled for 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on both Monday and Tuesday, December 7 and 8, 2020.

The conference is being organized by 60 members of the scientific committee and led by co-chairs Dr. Nima Shamsaei, director of the National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME) and Dr. Moshen Seifi, ASTM International’s director of global additive manufacturing programs

“This year’s event will be the largest conference ASTM has held to date and will consist of more than a dozen tracks and double the number of speakers with respect to last year’s event,” according to Seifi. “The conference will involve a broad group of ASTM committees and external stakeholders, setting the stage to bring nearly 350 experts from more than 25 countries to exchange the latest developments in the field of additive manufacturing with an emphasis on transition of research to standardization. We are aware of time-zone differences and are making every effort to hold this virtual event seamlessly with the latest available technology.”

“ASTM ICAM 2020 will address the application of specific requirements for various industry sectors in addition to covering the fundamentals of the AM process chain,” says Shamsaei. “Industry, academia, and government agency professionals in the AM community will join together virtually to address the need for industry standards, design principles, qualification and certification challenges, and more.”
